Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has had surgery in his knee after being hauled off in the 4-0 win in Barcelona .
Laporte damaged his ribs and lateral meniscus with Brighton defender Adam Webster in a challenge.
City have not given a sign of the length of time the 25-year-old will be outside although the operation was successful.
Laporte made 35 league appearances last year the only City outfield player to perform with more.
After he was called up by coach Didier Deschamps for its 2020 qualifiers from Albania and Andorra the injury ruled him from a debut for France.
Laporte’s absence leaves City with John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi as principal defenders after the departure of Vincent Kompany to eventually become player-manager of Anderlecht at the summer.
